Dreams and Nightmares: Our Desires and Fears

Posted 15 Feb 2010 — by The Spirit Mind
Category Spiritual

Eloping with your beloved or bashing up your boss….these are what dreams are made of. Getting terrorised by gangsters or ghosts or getting hopelessly lost in an unfriendly foreign land…these are our dreams turning into nightmares.

Riding our wishes, we become what we want to be in our dreams. Dreading our fears, we face what we never want to happen. Deep in sleep, our secret desires or fears buried down in our minds come to life as we dream. All these pleasures or tortures vanish in a second when we wake up to our stark reality. And we wish if only these come true. Or, that our fears never materialise.

Despite their power to please, amuse, bewilder or frighten us, our dreams dominate us. Rarely, we get dreamless sleep because our minds go on ticking even when we are asleep. We speak and listen, see all colours and feel all emotions in our dreams. Yet dreams remain mysterious.

Both our desires and fears in our dreams are an illusion, called ‘maya’ by the Eastern mystics who add that even when we are not sleeping, the world around us is also just an illusion or maya. A life lived through the mind is a life of dreams. That is the meaning of the concept of maya.

Says Osho, “Dreams are only a translation of thinking in the language of sleep and thinking is nothing but a translation of dreaming in the language of the day. You go on moving between the two: dreaming and thinking. Both are desiring. So the problem is not dreams but desiring. Now the challenge is how to overcome having these desires for when the dreams are over everything is the same. Nothing has happened and nothing will happen after they are over.”

So the crucial question is: how do we stop dreaming in our sleep and even while awake?

The Russian spiritual master, Gurdjieff used to say that the first effort is to awake in a dream and see the dream as a dream. He had a few techniques for how to awake
in a dream. He would teach his disciples that every night, when they went to sleep, they should go on repeating as deeply as possible, as passionately as possible, ‘This time when I start dreaming in the night I will raise my hand and touch my head. And immediately when I touch my head the remembrance will happen to me that this is a dream.’
For months together the disciple would think, auto-suggest. Every night falling into sleep they would repeat it again and again with deep passion, so that it entered into the very unconscious layers of the mind.

The challenge is to go beyond the illusion or maya to face the reality. Being more and more aware at all times is the answer. The Zen masters of Japan practice a very demanding system. When the disciples sit in meditation with eyes closed, the master watches them with a stick. The moment he sees one of them losing attention or awareness, he hits him with the stick. After many years, when the disciples become very aware during the daytime, the same procedure is started when they sleep! Fortunately, the enlightened master, Osho, has gifted us easier methods with his meditations. Let’s stop the ticking of our minds with them and wake up.

I Can Get Rid Of My Nightmares

Posted 12 Feb 2010 — by The Spirit Mind
Category Spiritual

Okay I know what you’re thinking, I want to get rid of my nightmares. But make no mistake because you can. Everyone deserves a good night’s rest but often times our nights aren’t so good especially when it’s filled with horrible nightmares. Nightmares can stem from anxiety, depression and stress. A hard day of work can lead to a hard time catching up on your Z’s. Taking the proper steps by identifying what causes your stress, switching up your sleeping habits, seeking therapy or resorting to medication are all ways to get rid of nightmares.

Remove the problems that are removable. Discover what it is has you stressing and uneasy. Ask yourself if the problem appear in my sleep. If so identify what it is that bothers you the most with this crisis. Lots of times very difficult things experienced in an individual’s life can result to causing trauma which can slowly grow into nightmares. An event that has left an impression in our lives for the worst can re-emerge as a nightmare. If a person is stressed at work, home or even financially this may haunt them sometimes as well converting into a bad dream. Nightmares can bring about some very disappointing feelings such as anger, fear, guilt and sadness. The brain is always working, no matter what it is always pumping blood and functioning, so even when you are asleep the brain is doing is job and sometimes it overworks and the ending result can be a horrible nightmare. And are some cases medications have been known to have side effects of nightmares or night sweats. Whether realized or not the brain is always aware of what it is that is going on, so this is why it’s very important to locate the root of the problem and find a solution.

Cut back on the caffeine. If caffeine is a daily ritual you may want to consider finding a substitute. This power enhancement is sure to increase the chances of nightmares. The closing of the day brings upon anxiety once caffeine has left the system. When body crashes, and is prepared to rest at night it you are prone to having a bad dream because the brain still working trying to catch up with the body. Do not eat heavy meals before sleeping. Eating a heavy meal promotes the brain to work overtime. While you are asleep the brain is concentrating on breaking down food that has entered your digestive system. The posture you are asleep in will also have an effect on what happens once you close your eyes. Believe it r not the position you sleep in can affect whether or not you will get rest.

Therapy is an excellent way to get over this problem. Speaking to a professional can help rid nightmares. A special type of therapy practiced at the University of Mexico is called, Imagery Rehearsal Therapy. This happens when the client is awake and faced with the issue that occurs in their dreams. Being awake give them the opportunity to handle the problem with a clear and conscious mind. This allows the nightmare to be less intimidating and easier for the matter to be addressed.

Topiramate, nefazodone, and gabapentin are all medications that require seeking the advice of medical doctor. There are limited medicines for curing nightmares however, the medicines mentioned have been used and been helpful to those suffering from PTSD (POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER) Medications can be a last resort if therapy or options at home haven’t been useful in curing bad dreams.

Nevertheless, nightmares can be gone as long as you take the appropriate steps of getting rid of them. It’s best to always be honest with yourself and evaluate the issues that may be discomforting to you and then work through them. Pay close attention to your eating habits as well as sleeping position. Nightmares can be cured if you take the time out to confront the things that are bothersome to you whether it’s in the past, present or future, because getting the sleep and peace we need shouldn’t be a nightmare.

Are You Afraid of Nightmares? (Growing Up Smart Body Fact #21)

Posted 11 Feb 2010 — by The Spirit Mind
Category Spiritual

My son has nightmares. Just like me. They scare the bejeebies out of him. Me, too. My nighttime nemesis was the Wicked Witch of the West. My son won’t say exactly what makes him dread the dark. Not yet.

Fact is we all have nightmares, especially kids. Sometimes, anticipating a bad dream is more upsetting than the actual dream. That’s why it always helps to talk in the clarity of daylight. When the time is right, here’s an article about nightmares written just for kids.

“Have you ever been so scared you couldn’t scream? Nightmares can do that to you. Everybody dreams. And everybody has nightmares once in a while. The good thing about nightmares is that no matter how real they seem, they’re only dreams. They aren’t real and they can’t hurt you.

Stressful things that happen during the day can turn good dreams into bad dreams. Nightmares are almost always connected to something that happened to you or something you saw during the day. Watching a violent movie or reading a scary book can give you nightmares. Problems at school, stress from homework, or problems at home can cause nightmares, too.

Here are a few ideas to help you deal with those bad dreams:

Talk to your mom or dad or a friend about the nightmare and how it makes you feel. Sleep with something that makes you feel more secure. Open your bedroom door so you can hear and talk to your family. Use a nightlight so that if you wake up suddenly, you can see where you are. Write down your dreams—good and bad—in a journal exactly as you remember them. A list of dreams will help you understand what’s on your mind and may help you discover what’s causing your nightmares.”

California Dreaming to Cale-fornee-a Nightmares!

Posted 02 Dec 2009 — by The Spirit Mind
Category Spiritual

Two public employee unions on Monday sued Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to block his effort to furlough state workers in a cost-cutting measure as California’s treasury runs out of money. I guess the unions feel that’s what they need to do to look good in the eyes of their union members; however, reality is reality. You can’t squeeze blood out of a turnip, even though the liquid is red.

In this day and time being employed is good regardless of pay or days worked.

Schwarzenegger has issued an executive order to require that all state employees take two unpaid days off each month starting in February. The governor said the measure is needed to conserve cash, with the state budget gap estimated to reach $42 billion a year and a half from now.

The lawsuit, filed in Sacramento County Superior Court, asserts that only the Legislature can alter the pay of workers who have labor contracts with the state. It asks the courts to issue a temporary stay to stop Schwarzenegger’s efforts, which could affect 230,000 workers. “We don’t think he has the authority,” said Bruce Blanning, executive director of Professional Engineers in California Government.

Will Bush and Congress bail California out after the auto industry?

A California official is warning that the state will run out of money in about two months unless a budget deal is struck.
State Controller John Chiang said Monday that his office could be forced to defer billions of dollars in payments or issue IOUs. He says the instability of the banking industry has made borrowing money to bridge the gap an uncertain possibility.

From California dreaming, the land of great prosperity, to a California nightmare. About the only good thing one can say about the state of affairs of California is that they’re not alone! Misery loves company.
