Religulous

  • In this new comedy from director Larry Charles (BORAT, “Seinfeld”), comedian and TV host Bill Maher (“Real Time with Bill Maher,” “Politically Incorrect”) takes a pilgrimage across the globe on a mind-opening journey into the ultimate taboo: questioning religion. Meeting the high and low from different religions, Maher simply asks questions, like “Why is faith good?”

COMEDIAN & TV HOST BILL MAHER TAKES A PILGRIMAGE ACROSS THE GLOBE ON A MIND-OPENING JOURNEY INTO THE ULTIMATE TABOO: QUESTIONING RELIGION.Amazon.com
Bill Maher incurs the wrath of multiple religious zealots of myriad faiths in Religulous, a snarky but unexpectedly powerful documentary. Maher bluntly disputes the value of religion in a world made increasingly dangerous, on the one hand, by fanaticism of all kinds and the human race’s environmental self-destructiveness on the other. No one is immune from Maher’s dogged questions about the illogic and negative fallout of doctrines that advocate violence or shun scientific evidence or marginalize minorities or punish anyone who disagrees with any religion… More >>

I don’t have to prove myself or my beliefs to Bill or anyone else. I really don’t care what he belives. Beliving in God is a choice based on faith. Thats it. No other discussion is necessary. Bill makes his money baiting people. Bill, go out and get a real job and try working for a living.

I wish I could give this junk 0 stars. Why is this even in the religious section of this website?! This blasphemous movie is an offense to all people of faith and to God himself. It seems Bill Maher and those like him won’t be happy until America is seduced into the giving away of all the beliefs and freedoms that have made her great. They won’t rest until the worshipers of God and their teachings are silenced and everyone believes in what Bill does. Don’t be fooled, Bill does indeed have a dogmatic, violent and absolute religion and it’s called atheism (albeit with a halo of existentialism). It seems Mr. Maher has decided to become a contributor to the destruction of our peacefuly coexistent society, pity. As a libertarian, I do support Bill’s right to say whatever he wants, as I will not hold a double standard. But I feel athiests will nevertheless always abuse their freedom in advancing their intolerant beleifs. Tell me when atheism was a force for good in the world? When has it produced anything more than the devaluation of human life and rights? If there is no God, where do we even get our “rights” from? We are all just monkeys in their eyes, worthless people with worthless dreams. But we who believe in God know that we are not just people, we all count, and we do have rights and one of those is to worship our maker. We are the intelligent ones, we can order our own lives well, and show a gentleness atheism can only briefly imitate. Only a fool says in his heart, “There is no god.” Bill Maher is a foolish, foolish man, and doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

I chose not to waste two hours of my life watching what is certainly another one of Bill Maher’s attempts to cram his personal views and opinions down everyone’s throats.

Whether Maher is making one of his all-too-frequent visits to The Tonight Show in order to satisfy Jay Leno’s left-slanted agenda, or any of his other undeserving television appearances, this overbearing piece of slime seems to thoroughly believe in his mind that whatever he thinks is right. And god forbid you have a differing view than Maher, because if you are not right in line with Maher then he will be sure to ridicule you with his smurky and arrogant manner.

It’s too bad that someone such as Bill Maher gets as much attention as he does. This man is completely irrelevant and does not deserve the least bit of attention. Except for perhaps a clip on the news about him getting crushed by a garbage truck.

    Maher and garbage, quite fitting.

I wanted to see and hear the content of “Religulous” when it first hit theatres because I wanted to know what other people will see and hear.

There is so much that I could say in response to the entire presentation, but I’ll limit myself to responding to Bill Maher’s closing statement, which was far more serious than the rest of his presentation.

He said, “Anyone who tells you that they know, they just know what happens when you die, I promise you, you don’t. How can I be so sure? Because I don’t know, and you do not posess mental powers that I do not”.

By the grace of almighty God, Christians do have the “power” that Bill Maher has yet to experience. It is the same miraculous power that gives spiritual life to the spiritually dead. Christians are able to identify with this letter that is addressed to them. Ephesians 2:1-10, “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them”.

Every Christian’s personal testimony may be found in Ezekiel 36:26-27, which says, “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances”.

The foundation of Christianity is not in our DOING. It is DONE. Finished by the object of our faith, the perfect, sinless life of Jesus Christ, which has been imputed by God to His people for eternity. He is the only One who has the power to draw you, or anyone else to Himself.

  5. G. Sapara says:

Maher is neither original nor funny in this mean-spirited film.

I am a believer, but I don’t insist that everyone must think like me. Many of my best friends are still searching for their truth, and that’s fine with me. They are good people.

I understand that it’s fashionable to slam anyone who believes in God, it’s socially acceptable to many.

It is not, however, to me. It is no better to make fun of a believer than it is to poke fun at a non-believer. How about trying this: let everyone think/believe what they want, as long as they are good people?

Maher is a fool, and it should be pointed out that his intolerance is part of the problem, not a solution. He’s jumping on the bandwagon and collecting his paycheck while mocking a whole segment of society simply because they don’t agree with him.

For the record, I feel the same way about those who call themselves religious yet mock and terrorize those who don’t think as they do. They are ALL in the same boat.

Maher needs a lesson in tolerance.
